Clinicas Medicos is an amazing non-profit medical care center that's focus is caring for the growing and underserved latino population in downtown Chattanooga. As part of their commitment to serving the whole needs of the families that come into the space, they thought it would make sense to have some kind of active play space for the children to engage while they wait. After receiving a Causeway grant to purchase a playground, and feeling uninspired by the options available, they reached out to us to see if we might be interested in collaborating on just such a space.
As Range Projects got to work on fabricating the designed fixtures, we also worked to prepare to site. Through Causeway we were able to organize a Causemob, which is a large "flash" volunteer day. It was a great opportunity for the community of Chattanooga to familiarize themselves with the clinic's mission and help to support their aim.
We then reached out to our friend, and talented architect, Melody Rees to see if she wanted to join us. With her on our team we designed several concepts to pitch to the clinic, each with its own response to the space and need. The loop concept was chosen, which creates a type of journey around the space as children encounter different opportunities for improvisation and play
The result is a space that has both traditional and non-traditional play elements, and uses design creativity to make a space that uses low cost materials to maximize a limited budget. It is a play space that integrates into the architecture of the space, as well as into the vision and spirit of the clinic.
